honeyspider: (|| DD: Just say we were lovers)
Last night we had a combined birthday party for Lara and Alison, and I made them a cake. BEHOLD!

cake! )

To be fair, Woot made the actual cake itself since I was just doing to make a flat one but he decided 3D was the way to go. I really didn't think it was going to survive - you can't tell but it's on an impressive lean. It was delcious though and you can tell it's meant to be a Tardis so that's all that matters really. (The both of them are big Who fans, obviously. I only like old Who but I liked making the cake!)

Tomorrow (except it's today now because it's gone 5am) I have an appointment with a dental specialist to talk about a wisdom tooth. I need to get it removed but it turns out that the root is wrapped around the nerve or something so the dentist point blank said he wouldn't take it out. Which... fun. The appointment tomorrow is $200 and that's just for an x-ray and the guy telling me what I can do about it. I dread to think how much the actual removal is going to cost. It literally makes me whole body tense up just thinking about it. (The tooth I got pulled the other week only cost me $140 and I honestly almost cried with relief in the dentist chair.)

Money stress! Everyone loves money stress! I am currently earning $30 under what my rent is which is not at all stressful and making me constantly worried - who would worry about such a thing as that! The current reason for my lack of funds is actually a bit ridiculous - it's because I got a job. I was working a temporary typing position and since I'm on a government benefit I had to declare that money. Which would be all fine and dandy but the job paid fortnightly and the benefit pays weekly, and if you don't declare your earnings every week they have to fine you for it. But if I declared it by the week then I would have a week in between where I had no money whatsoever. Fun, right?

But I'm not working that job anymore and hopefully the next one I find will be weekly! (Not that jobs are exactly easy to find right now. Christchurch being earthquake city it's kind of difficult to find jobs unless you're in the construction business. That one is booming!)

It's my birthday in two weeks-ish and Lara made me put together a list of things I wanted that she could pick from. The list turned out to be all books and comic-related things. I'm rather predictable. (If I was her I'd just pick whichever thing was cheapest. I'm not really fussed about getting presents but she enjoys giving them.)

Speaking of comic books, I went to the Armageddon Expo a few weeks back, which is the geeky sci-fi/fantasy/comics/anime etc etc event we have here each year. It's not exactly ComicCon but we're a wee little place so I suppose that's fair. I even made a costume this year

costumes! )

Am I not the spitting image of Jean Grey? (After she'd eaten all the other X-Men, obviously.)

Further comic book ramblings: CAPTAIN AMERICA 2: WINTER SOLDIER. Holy shit, Winter Soldier SO EXCITE! It was pretty obvious from the first movie that they were going to eventually bring Bucky back and do the whole Winter Soldier in some way, but still I'm excited by the confirmation! All I need is Bucky/Natasha, you guys. IT'S ALL I WANT IN THIS WORLD. Please please please let me have my comic book true loves on screen! I know it's not likely since Avengers was really setting up Black Widow/Hawkeye as the pairing but BLACK WIDOW/WINTER SOLDIER THEY ARE THE MOST BESTEST LOVERS IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. (Or, at least, in comics. No comic relationship is better... except for Carol Danvers/Jessica Drew - shh! It's real! Shut up!)

Lara and I are both really excited for Silent Hill 2 as well. In my case I don't know why since I am terrible at horror movies! And having now watched the trailer I have even less doubt of my ability to actually make it through the movie without crying in fear. Terrible at horror movies! Atrocious! And yet... want. We're going to go to the movies to see it: this is a Bad Idea. The last horror movies I saw at the cinema were House on Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts, both of which still sort of haunt my memory to this day. So... yeah... cool.

It's started raining. This means busing to appointment adventures in the rain. Always fun!
I've just discovered this book shop. It is very very bad and tempting and has books books books and THEN I spotted that they also have graphic novels.

Lord help me.

I may have purchased Ms Marvel: Lightning Storm and a Tesla biography, and in 17 days when this comes out I WILL OWN IT. Because, HELL YES DOMINO/WOLVERINE.

I already foresee that this website may be my downfall. I'm still browsing.

Oh frak, they've got the Emma Frost origins series! Oh! And the Mystique one too. I AM EXCITE AND WILL OWN ALL THE COMICS.

DOOM.
Oh baby, let's talk about the library book sale. Last year I got nothing of interest, but this year I jackpotted.

The Atlas of Holy Places and Sacred Sites
Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia
Encyclopedia of the Gods
Mythical Beasts
Minoan and Mycenaean Art

An encyclopedia of Classical Music
A book on hieroglyphics
A book on the Mayan people/religion
A copy of The Bhagavad Gita

$21 :D

Tomorrow morning Alina and I are going back. Hopefully this time I'll find some fiction as well as all these heavy-arse reference books!
Today I finished the second book in the The Orphan's Tales series by Catherynne M Valente.

You guys. Oh, you guys. Read them if you like... uh, books. I guess it falls under fantasy, but it was so much more than that. Stories upon stories filled with monopods and firebirds and Djinn and saints and girls with stories written upon their eyelids. It was completely beautiful and I am so sad that it's over now. I need to go read everything she's ever written right this minute.

(For the record: I am a wee bit drunk right now, but that didn't make the book any less beautiful.)

Bookums.

Oct. 3rd, 2010 08:54 pm
I just finished reading The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente. It was utterly lovely and I may be awful at descriptions but Valente certainly isn't. It was completely different to anything I've ever read before though, and it was stories within stories within stories and filled with amazing myths and characters and general GUHness.

And I've just seen that they have the second volume of it (Cities of Coin and Spice) at the library so I am so going in to get that tomorrow.

I'm now trying to read The Scar by China Miéville and as much as I'd really love to get into it as the book was highly recommended to me, I just can't. This makes me sad.

Also making me really sad is that I lost my old reading list in my computer crash, so I've started building up a new one, but it's really pathetic so far. Especially since I can't remember most of the things written on the old one. Books are lost to the ether!
I just found out they're making one of my favourite teen books - The Moth Diaries - into a movie, which makes me both excited and nervous. (Because, books into movies is often a terrible thing, but sometimes made of pure glory.) Lily Cole is going to be in it and I Did Not Want but now that I've seen a promo picture for it she actually looks so incredibly perfect for the character that I am so very on board.

Other movies from books I love that need to get their arse into gear and HURRY UP:

Looking For Alaska - I love this book so much (John Green ♥ ♥) and the movie has been languishing in pre-production hell since about 2005. (Release date says 2013 at the moment but when I first heard wind of it it said 2010. So... yeah. Might never actually happen.)

Lunar Park - my favourite Bret Eastern Ellis book and I think the movie is still a rumour, but I'm not sure. 'Bret' is maybe going to be played by Benicio Del Toro. I don't care who they cast as long as it's creepy when they finish. I read most of that book at 3am by torchlight while sitting on the floor of a boyfriend's place and I kept thinking about things crawling out from under the bed... (Huh. IMDB says 2011. I think it might be bullshitting though.)

Hack/Slash - okay, so not a book but a graphic novel but I don't care. It's epic and I want it and I wish they would cast Cassie already and stop taunting me! (Again, 2012 is the release date listed but nothing has even happened with it.) How can the studios not want to make this right now? It's a series high on gore about a hot chick who goes after monsters! Come on, people!

There are other book-movies that I've gone "!!!!!!!" about when I found out, I'm sure, but I can't remember any other them now that I'm trying.

Bascially this post is to say "Boy, I love books. And movies."
Alison just sent me a text that just said OH MY GOD. Which is not comforting and so I'm really hoping she just finished her book and is reacting to that. In which case, I cackle.

Ahaha, follow up text: THIS BOOK. HOLY FUCK. I AM FLAILING IN THE STAFF ROOM AND NOW I HAVE TO GO BACK TO WORK!

Everyone loves dramatic books. (I'm reading Ovid's Metamorphosis. It's not that dramatic and I already know how all the stories end. Bugger.)

Have Rosie and Candice pretending to be tigers for your time. )
This weekend I'm going to get to see Neil Gaiman. It's only started really kicking in in the last day or so and now I'm sort of like !!! about it. NEIL. MEETING NEIL. I think I might faint, you guys. He's so !!!

I'll also be seeing Amanda Palmer on the same weekend and then again the next weekend. I feel so shiny and awesome. And tonight we're finishing Battlestar and that is pretty damn shiny as well.

Life is sweet. I'm kind of thrilled to be a part of it right at this moment.
Tonight we had our LFoD Christmas get together since the actual day didn't work for all of us. Which means early presents FTW.

I am sitting wearing a shirt with a big Obama face printed on it and I've been making it nom on things for the sake of hilarity. It's awesome. I also got DVDs (Alison and I may have gone halves on season one of BSG and had it as a shared present...) as well as a Camelot calendar (Waterhouse, I ♥s you!) and the coolest book ever on Gothic homemaking written by Voltire. (OMG, thank you so freaking much, Clare! We love it!)

And now Jen has stolen my hair straightener so she can take it away to the coast with her. Now they sound like they're talking about porn outside my door...

Books <3

Dec. 5th, 2008 05:31 pm
I just finished reading John Green's Looking For Alaska, and it was completely gorgeous and wonderfully sad. There are few things better than a heartbreaking and beautiful novel. I've also read An Abundance of Katherines by him which was also fantastic. He writes the most real teenage characters. It's amazing. I love finding new authors to fawn over.

Alison said that the library has his third book, Paper Towns on hold for her and I'm going to steal it and read it before she can. Because I am evil and books make my soul happy. (Hey Ali, according to his website the rights for Alaska and Paper Towns have both been sold to movie studios. I want to see Alaska as a movie, although thinking of all the many ways that could ruin it is scary.)

Other recent reads that were awesome:

Black Pearls: A Faerie Strand by Louise Hawes is a collection of wonderfully fantastic and dark fairytale re-tellings. I don't do descriptions so well but it was fantastic and dark and sexy and awesome. (Yes, I am so cool with my words.) Plus the illustrations in it were gorgeous. (Plus, her version of the Pied Piper? Never in my life have I thought a piper was hotter.)

And then there's another short stories collection called St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves by Karen Russell, of which the title story is the best within it.

Writers make me happy. Very very happy.

See, and now because I've read a nice proper book and talked literature I don't have to feel guilty about the fact that tonight is my Gossip Girl night. Blaaaaaair.
It is almost six in the morning and I just finished reading Wicked by Gregory Maguire which was so ridiculously fantastic. I'm tempted to now not sleep and instead go sneaking into Ali's bedroom in search of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, for I know she owns it!

A better idea, maybe, might be to actually sleep since I'm supposed to be going to American Mike's going away party tonight. Dilemma, dilemma.

Bah, sleep is for the weak and reading is for the strong!

I have to pay off my damn credit card because a) the bank is honestly about to murder me, and b) I have to upgrade this thing again. At least it allowed me to keep Mrs Lovett's breasts.
Oh fingers, why you so cold?

There is a rat balanced rather precariously upon my head. He's going to fall and he knows it, which is why he keeps burying his claws in my scalp. Ow, Byron! He needs to learn to remain in more comfortable places. Not very bright is he.

Everyone is out now and the house is stupidly quite, which means I require music. And now that that's fixed in a minute I'm about to call someone to ask about an Othello audition. Because, mmmm, Othello. I haven't done any proper acting since high school so it's very possible I suck at it by now but, hey, it's just an audition. No harm in that. I wish I still had the singing voice I used to in my earlyish teens because then I could do muuusicals. I loves me some musicals.

Alison and I got out the first season of Queer As Folk last week and it was awesome, especially in the deja vu kind of way. Man, I used to love that show so much. I am discovering I am still quite fond. Jen got sucked into it as well toward the end of the season and now both she and Ali and flailing over Season Finale Dramah. It's funny ;D And then we watched the first episode of Dexter (with bubbly!) when it was on the telly the other night. Good, although I'm not yet sure what I make of it. I shall withhold judgement until I've seen a few more.

Sena brought around the latest episode of SPN and I now can't get the silly fake theme song out of my head:

Ghost, Ghost Facers! We go the places where the others will not!
Ghost, Ghost Facers! We stay in the kitchen when the kitchen gets hot!

Heh heh heh.

And, oh! The Sarah Conner Chronicles are going to start soon! Fuck yeah! I'm really hoping it's going to be good. Please wipe all memory of that terrible third film from my mind.
Drinkies the other night were awesome. Much of this opinion may be because of the fact that we got to write 'OWNED' on the face of someone who passed out. We told him he was lucky we didn't shave an eyebrow off. American Mike now swears vengeance against 'that ninja' but we all know he'll never manage it. No one out ninjas the ninja.

And now I'm tired because I stayed up all night reading Fight Club, which was written in a way that made me think I was more tired than I was. (I also couldn't see the characters as any one but who played them in the movie, even though I still haven't seen it in it's entirety.)

Tonight we're going to watch Spiceworld. This is not a joke however much you wish it was. Oh yes, Spiceworld. I can quote this movie. Oh, the mispent days of my youth! There may have to be drinking to go along with this.

(Tim! Now that Batman is all done, Indiana Jones?)
Jen is making LASAGNE tonight. Lasagne, peoples! Get excited! I am!

My room is cleaner than it's been in about six months and I'm finding it rather novel not to have to wade my way through/jump over large piles of crap just to get between door and bed. The idea of not having to watch where I'm stepping is indeed a strange one. I even dusted! (Do not panic, my dear friends. I promise it shan't happen again. I am far to delicate to continue such an atrocious activity.)

I've been murdering people in Darker London. We may have had a wee school massacre in-game and I got to kill two there, and I just find I can't stop myself now. (I love Gloria far more than I should, the poor evil messed up girl ♥) I'm so pleased I have more characters than anyone ever needs. It means more for killings! Yay! I take out all homicidal rage on imaginary people so I don't get in trouble for it in real life. Speaking of homicide, I wants the third Dexter book, dammit. The library hasn't got it yet and I'm the fifteenth person on the hold list. Argh, it's going to be forever.

And, finally, from the wonderful Overheard In New York

Woman: How dare you?! How dare you?! How can you say that? How can you tell my child I don't love him? Apologize! Apologize!
Man: It's a dog.
Woman: How dare you?! Apologize right now!

I'm trying very hard to fight the urge to curl up on the couch and watch Army of Darkness with a cup of tea. *chews lip* This may be inescapable. Besides, AoD is always a suitable beginning to a night that will end at drinking at Sporagmos. Actually, The Dreamers is sitting in Ali's room. I'm going to reeead instead!
Point One: Being ill sucks arse. It makes sleeping all stupid and difficult because your nose is all gross and stuffy. And this cold better die before Thursday, because I don't want to be sick when I'm flying. Or when I'm supposed to be having a good time in Nimbin >_<

Point Two: I forget. Which is really annoying, because I know I had a Point Two to go here. It probably had something to do with Rocky Horror, since we were watching that tonight.

Point Three: Where is Neil When You Need Him? is such an awesome album. I read Coraline today so I could get more of the references, and while I'm in Nimbin and on the plane I'm going to read Trader. I like music inspired by books. Makes me happy.
