Dear Joss Whedon,

You know I love you, baby, but we've got to talk about this Avengers cast. I know, I know, you've probably heard it all already but maybe that's because people were expecting a little more from the guy who brought us Buffy and Firefly, both shows filled with a wide range of super awesome women.

So, Joss, where are the chicks? You've got all your heroes nicely cast - it's a lovely big boys club there - and the only superheroine you're going to let us have in it is Black Widow? For serious, Joss? The lack of powered-up women in the comic book movies in general - other than X-Men - is terrible and I thought that if anyone was going to fix that it would be you. And it's not as though you'd seriously have to struggle to do it either. The Avengers were always a mixed team and sometimes they even had more women than men on it. Hell, one of the founding members was a woman.

How about Ms. Marvel? Scarlet Witch? Wasp? Come on! (I'd love to see She-Hulk personally but that wouldn't happen in a movie that already has the Hulk.) You've said that there will be other women in the movie but in the roles of love interests. Hey, guess what, Joss? That's not the same thing. Maybe woman watching the movie might want a little more on their side than just getting to be the pretty girl the hero returns home to at the end of the adventure.

Not so much love at this point,
Circe.

(PS: If you could seriously get to making that Wonder Woman movie - and cast it well - I'd totally forgive you for all of this.)

If they cast Megan Fox I'll kill something.

If they could magically cast pre-plastic-surgery Megan Fox I'd settle for just maiming something.

She's too young and - my main issue - she can't really act. (Not that I've seen her in anything but Transformers, Jennifer's Body and that Simon Pegg movie where she played... Megan Fox.)

I had a list somewhere of the actors I thought would be awesome for Wonder Woman but now I can't even remember who was on it.

She was in a Simon Pegg movie? How... thrilling.

Hmm. I don't know if Janeane Garofalo can act, but I think she'd make an awesome Wonder Woman.

Ugh, I LOVE her. She's so fantastic and witty and sexy. Ahem.

There was a lot of talk ages ago of Megan Gale (http://www.google.co.nz/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&biw=1680&bih=840&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=megan+gale&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=) being cast and she has the right look but I've no clue if she can act, seeing as she's a model and they're usually atrocious. Bridget Regan (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/4/43215/918262-wwbridgetcompare_super.jpg) looks really good, but I'm almost positive she's a terrible actress. (From the few bits I've seen of her.)

So, basically, apparently everyone who looks like Wonder Woman sucks for the role.

Let's transplant Linda Hamilton's talent into Bridget Regan's body. For science~? :D

That would be a beautiful creature, though. Especially if blended (magicSCIENCE) with some element of Angelina Jolie.

LET US BUILD A SUPER SEXY ACTING MACHINE!

And invite her to hot tub parties when she's not busy working...

Well we won't have time for the hot tub parties in between all the sexy Jello wrestling tournaments

i thought we talked about this ;_;

I seriously did a double take when I heard that. I mean, if there's one thing Joss Whedon has consistently loved, it's ladies with superpowers. You'd think this movie would therefore be his tribute to ladies with superpowers or something. And instead we get one, and some love interests. Oh Joss :|

It's UNCOOL.

I can't believe he's skipping the opportunity for Ms. Marvel! Tough feminist jet fighter with epic powers and a fucked up personal issues? SHE WAS MADE FOR YOU, JOSS.

I have to wonder if the studios vetoed these female characters because they might overpower the boys and thus make them less 'manly and cool'. It can't be a coincidence that the only female hero we're getting is Black Widow, who while very cool only has the abilities of a very impressive regular human. (And that whole slower aging/slightly faster healing thing.)

So...did he write the movie and cast it then? Or is he just directing? Because if he's the director, chances are those decisions were made my someone else.

Either way, way to lose big time, Marvel Studios.

Actually, I don't even know. I sort of just assumed he was writing it.

EITHER WAY, HE'S JOSS WHEDON. MAKE IT HAPPEN, MAN!

He might be! And if he did, SHAME ON HIM for not writing any of the other women into it. If he's the director though, he probably can't pull a Joss Whedon Magic Card and demand more women if there aren't more in the script. I wish he would though because *sigh*

I just checked. He is the writer.

LOOK AT MY DISPLEASURE, JOSS.

That being said, because Avengers is following on from the solo Avenger movies, and presumably leading into others, they may not have given him much of a choice in heroes he was allowed to use. I mean, just look at the Avengers-related movies that have been or will be released: Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America... I honestly don't think Marvel / Disney are giving Joss the options here. Realistically, they probably wouldn't give him Wasp without Goliath, and Ms Marvel and Scarlet Witch are probably just as likely to turn up in an X-Men movie as Avengers.

The fact that there have been no female-lead superhero movies in the recent past is a problem all of it's own. Unless I'm forgetting some? Maybe I am. But mostly comic book movies are sticking to the boys and it fucking sucks. It's not as though the audience isn't there either, because there are plenty of woman who'd like to see some of these heroines actually get onto the big screen, and plenty of men who wouldn't be adverse to it either for the sheer hotness if nothing else.

Actually, I've realised I can think of a female-led comic book film: Catwoman. God damn it, I need to google because if that piece of shit is all there has been in the last decade I might be sick.

Oh, and Elektra. Lord Almighty.

Maybe there's a VERY GOOD REASON why the studios think a female-led film will tank as the only two they've made were complete BOLLOCKS.

Good point. The lack of female-lead super-hero movies lately really is a problem. I hadn't really noticed to be honest, but now that you mention it, it's frakking ridiculous. I thought Elektra was okay... but that was in comparison to Daredevil, mind you.

I can't actually think of too many female stand-alone heroes in Marvel... but maybe they're just not the ones I was into? In the end, I really couldn't afford to explore much beyond X-Men and Spider-Man most of the time because it took so much to even keep up with them.

That makes sense, and that's awesome! I only read my actual LJ when I get home from work (though I do sometimes post on my phone) so I wasn't sure. ♥

Bah. Totally expected more from Joss Whedon. And why are lame heroes like Hawkeye allowed on the team when awesomes like Ms. Marvel aren't?!

I have NO idea. Hawkeye is rubbish.

He's pissweak! I mean, you've got mutants with super powers, a bazillionaire with a war suit, a god... and then just some guy with a slightly freakish proficiency with antiquated weaponry. Ms. Marvel could kick his purple butt.
