The Grand Chancellor hotel is one of the tallest buildings in the city and in each aftershock it is now rocking. It's move about a metre horizontally and is now on a lean to the east. I think Alison said they've evacuated everyone from all the blocks around which is good since when it comes crashing down like they're waiting for it's going to make an awfully big bang.

This is my favourite photo of the earthquake damage because instead of horrifying me it makes me giggle. (The giggling could be panic, so don't rely on that.)

The park across the road from us is being turned into a refuge center. I wish we didn't have to worry about how water and food or I'd cook up a shitload of comfort food for those people. Alison and I are considering going over with the massive collection of children's books we've got but we might just end up getting in the way so we'll probably just hand them over and leave.

I'm sure anything you do will be much appreciated by the refugees. The water and food situation does sound especially worrying -- is there any information about how long before they can get the water running again?

It depends on where you are in the city as to whether or not you have running water. Apparently pumping stations have been destroyed so if you are close to a working pumping station that also has power then you may have running water but even if it is currently on they say it is not guaranteed to stay on. The water is not guranteed to be clean as the sewerage system has been trashed and sewerage is being discharged into the ground or the river. They can't just patch up the systems like they did last time. At this stage they can't give a timeframe on repair.
The council has set up water tankers at local schools for people to get water from and the supermarkets are scrambling to get cleaned up and open so people can get food. Food has been donated to the welfare centres.

Righto. How are you guys coping?? Doing okay?

This is Cath being lazy and not logging into her own lj.
I hadn't seen that picture. Poor old statue. Poor old city.

Apparently there are supermarkets opening, there is info on the stuff latest info page. Although there is lots of misinformation and rumor about on the internet and news.

The Grand Chancellor was the first building that I heard of on the radio that they said was looking dodgy and I thought it had already collapsed so was surprised to see pics of it standing. But its not surprising that it is dangerous cos its quite tall. If it goes I imagine that most of the city would feel the shockwave or hear the noise.

I have to go to work tomorrow. You guys stay safe and look after each other.

You look after yourself as well and you're amazing. You go be the nurse goddess you are.

From the officially website thing: "The welfare centres are vital for displaced people who are in need of assistance, as a place to find company, food, water and refuge," said Social Development Minister Paula Bennett.

"Donated food supplies are being trucked into the welfare centres by the Food and Grocery Council and other organisations."

So at least they'll have things!

They have changed their mind, its not Pioneer any more, now its Cowels Stadium on Pages Rd.

I am cooking us a Lamb Roast! They are just saying on the news there will not be enough water for a few days. Keep saving it!

I'm so glad to see you guys reaching out, I know it means a lot to those people as it means a lot to you guys to know you are being thought of by the rest of us.

Keep being strong for each other!

I'll tell Poseidon he needs to put a leash on his tantrums. Quakes are a thing of the past for that boy. He's not allowed anymore.

Just the fact that you're thinking of people like this is something.
*hugs more*

Did you end up taking anything over?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_honeyspider/ 2011-02-23 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, they ended up setting the centre up somewhere else across the city and we're carless. So alas we couldn't help out with the books.
